The Most Common SPF Mistakes Estheticians See

As an esthetician, one of the most common skincare concerns I see is sun damage, and often, it’s not because people never use sunscreen.

It’s because many people unknowingly make small SPF mistakes that add up over time.

The good news? Most of them are easy to correct.

1. Only Wearing SPF on Sunny Days

One of the biggest misconceptions about sunscreen is that it’s only necessary during beach days or direct outdoor activities.

In reality, UV exposure happens during everyday life:

  • driving
  • walking outdoors
  • sitting near windows
  • running errands
  • incidental daily exposure

Daily SPF is important even when the weather is cloudy or you’re spending most of the day indoors.

2. Not Applying Enough Sunscreen

Most people apply far less sunscreen than needed to achieve the labeled SPF protection.

For the face and neck, a general guideline is about:

  • two finger lengths
    or
  • approximately 1/4 teaspoon

Applying too little product may significantly reduce protection.

3. Skipping Reapplication

Sunscreen doesn’t last all day, especially during:

  • sweating
  • swimming
  • prolonged outdoor exposure

Reapplication is an important part of maintaining protection throughout the day.

4. Forgetting Commonly Missed Areas

Some of the most frequently missed spots include:

  • neck
  • ears
  • chest
  • around the eyes
  • hairline
  • Tops of the hands

These areas often show visible signs of sun exposure over time.

5. Avoiding SPF Because It Feels Uncomfortable

Many people stop wearing sunscreen consistently because they dislike the texture or feel of traditional SPF formulas.

Heavy, greasy, or chalky sunscreens can make daily use feel frustrating, especially under makeup or alongside skincare.

That’s one of the reasons Allay was created: to make mineral SPF feel more wearable, comfortable, and skincare-focused for everyday life.

Consistency Matters Most

Perfect sunscreen habits aren’t the goal, consistency is.

Small daily choices can make a meaningful difference in supporting long-term skin health and protecting against visible sun damage over time.

At Allay, we believe SPF should feel simple, approachable, and easy enough to become part of your everyday skincare ritual.
